Research Interests

We worked on a theoretical and vibrational spectroscopic study of dative bonded molecules, particularly those with B-N and B-P dative bonds. The interest in MIDA esters, or synthetic substrates used in iterative cross-coupling reactions, is the boron-nitrogen dative bond stretching frequency in which there has been a great controversy over its assignment in the past fifty years. Our experimental and theoretical values of this mode correlate very well, and because of the great stability of this new molecule, we believe we have found the lowest B-N stretching frequency recorded to date. There has been an extensive study on boron-phosphorus dative bonded molecules, but a trend between the B-P stretch and how the molecule is substituted has yet to be discovered. We performed high level calculations on a series of B-P molecules and compared the results to experimental spectroscopic data in an attempt to elucidate a trend.
